Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to question particular rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
