In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
