Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or did there exist any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team during the off-season, but then he admitted that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the rest of their first five games, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it has been hard to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

At least one man continued to smile amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He was on the previous campaign at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there temporarily. The signing restriction necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Finding His Best Role

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the nature of the player's talent. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
