European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
