Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
